At the crossroads of painting and photography, chemigramming is an alternative process to silver photography, carried out without a camera. The technique involves the application of various adherent products to the surface of photosensitive paper. The paper is then successively immersed in different baths containing silver-based chemicals (developer and fixer) to produce an abstract image resulting from chemical reactions between the adhering products and the photosensitive paper.
The aim of this workshop is to explore the very materiality of the photographic image. How is the image formed on the surface of a photosensitive material? What chemical reactions/processes are involved in the process? How can a photographic image be created through a series of photochemical manipulations? In other words, how can we approach photography from a plastic point of view?
