A benchmark in experimental performance, Alexander’s Annexe is a band rich in tradition. Internationally renowned pianist Sarah Nicolls plays the grand piano, Mira Calix is the composer and David Sheppard the sound designer. Playing on improvisation, the works as a whole stand out for their delicate electronic deconstructions against a background of piano music, with results ranging from fragile scratchings to heavy squeakings. The different worlds of these three musicians give rise to an astonishing spectrum of sound. They have already played at international festivals including Leeds FUSE, Ravello and MIT Rome in Italy, Club Transmediale in Berlin, Electron in Geneva and Sonar in Barcelona.
E LIVE [TU]
The group is made up of two members, Ziad Meddeb Hamrouni (ARKHIS) and Mohsen Ben Cheikh (ZENMO). With diverse musical backgrounds ranging from rock, blues, jazz, reggae, dub and hip hop, E began when the two founding members met in the band Stavka.
Their meeting with Erkan Boujellebia, producer and pioneer of electronic music in Tunisia, was decisive for Ziad’s electronic orientation, and led Mohsen down this path. Their common interest in sound trituration led them to work on some basic experiments which took shape after a few months.
E was one of the first Tunisian electronic music groups, along with SKNDR, Skin Like Cream and Haythem Achour, to offer live performances in Tunisia.
Recently, E and SKNDR have set up a monthly electronic rendez-vous at the « Bœuf sur Le Toit », a club in the capital, with Breakcore, Drum’n’Bass, electronica and breakbeat sets.
